Something I learned about the knitting I'm doing currently...
1) What I thought I was doing as a "knit" stitch, actually is a "purl" stitch...
2) And I'm doing the "purl" stitch backwards...
3) When I got to the end of the row doing the "purl" stitch the way I've been doing it and decided to try it the "right" way, I found that the "right" way is less graceful (at least to me).. I can go so much faster doing it the way I've been doing it, which is apparently the "wrong" way, or at least, backwards. :o)
Oh, I'm knitting left needle to right needle, so that part is right.. It's just that instead of the right needle being in front of the left, and the yarn in front, I've got it the other way around.. right needle behind the left, yarn in the back.
Which,
is how the knit stitch works, so I discovered, except that in doing the knit, the right needle starts
in front of the left needle, then is moved behind the left through a stitch. Me, my right needle is starting behind the left in the first place.
Confusing, no?
Fortunately, the piece I'm working on now, it's all one kind of stitch and it does not matter what I use, it's just a simple blankie for the
Critter Knitters Knit-a-Thon project that
Wendy and
Liz have put together. Found via
Mac.
Anyway, I planned to do two blankies for this.. this first one will be 24"x24". Since I'm still new to knitting and have no clue about gauges, I just cast on a lot of stitches (hell, I didn't even keep count, I just did about an arm's length on a circular pair of needles), and it ended up being two feet long. It is in grey heather and lt. country blue, Caron 4 ply worsted acrylic.
The second one, I may actually do a swatch to gauge it so it will be a smaller 18"x18".. Don't know what yarn or colors I'll use yet, though.
But, back to my mix-up with the knit & purl stitches and how I'm doing the purl backwards... there
is and unfortunate turn to this.. discovering I'm doing these wrong may have screwed me up when I go back to my first project, which is the pink baby blanket (originally intended for my niece, but at this point who knows who it will go to), which uses both knit AND purl, yarn overs, knit or purl 2 together.... gah!. I am almost through one entire skein of yarn on that, and I'm afraid if I pick it back up I'll have to undo it all and start completely over again.. 😕 d'oh! Oh well. It's very crooked anyway so maybe it will be best if I start it over. Hehe.
That's all, folks...
