I've set up a consultation at Barnett Dulaney Perkins Eye Center to see if I am a good candidate for their new IntraLasik procedure. My appointment is September 30th.
Supposedly they offer financing, and if the programs look good, I may take the plunge and get my eyes lasered.
I've been thinking about doing that for a while now, ever since one of my former colleagues back in the days of technical support had his eyes done (before I started working there). He got it done the original way, with the nice metal blade to cut the corneal flap.
In addition to the issue of money, I'm also very nervous about things being near my eyes, especially sharp things, so those are two main factors in putting off having it done for so long. My eyes are awful, something like -5.75 and -5.50 (I think my right eye is worse than the left, or it could be the other way around.. I don't remember), which means I'm really nearsighted. I've worn glasses since second grade. I wore contacts all through junior high & high school, but toward the end of my high school years it was getting more and more difficult to wear them.. My eyes constantly felt drier than dust. I wear contacts only on "special occassions" anymore, which usually means on vacations so I can wear sunglasses at the amusement parks. Even then I can only manage to wear them for about 10 hours before they have to come out.
But now, there is this new version of Lasik called IntraLasik, which uses lasers through the whole procedure, including cutting the flap. More precision, much smaller margin of error.
One of
Josh's co-workers is getting his eyes done today, with IntraLasik. I'm hoping Josh will ask his co-worker next week how it went and all, so I'll have a near-firsthand account of the procedure. His co-workers eyes are about -1 worse than my own.
I am excited, because if I decide to do this, it will mean the end of my expensive-ass glasses (because my prescription is so high, I can have either really thick & heavy lenses, or go for the "featherweights", which I prefer but are more expensive). But at the same time, I am still a bit apprehensive, because although there will be no metal blade to do the cutting, something still has to attach to my eye in a suction like way (to hold it steady for the laser), and I already said I am weird about things getting near my eyes (except my own fingers). It is a strange phobia, but hopefully the sedative that every patient is given before the procedure will help allay my nervousness.
So we'll see what the consultation appointment holds in store for me. The decision will be based heavily on their financing options. Let's hope they're good.
That's all, folks...
