So, to catch up

Thursday, June 05, 2008

I guess not a whole lot has changed, really.  Still married, living at the same house, working at the same company although I’m in a different department.  Kiddo is growing up a bit too fast, but well, that’s what they do.

Oh, well, gas prices damn near doubled since I may have last complained about it.  I think yesterday we saw $4.03.

Bleh.  Well, time to go get dressed and take the kiddo to the doctor.  Seems she may have twisted her foot or ankle, so need to go get that checked out.

That’s MS. Gimpy, to you.

Saturday, August 13, 2005

My right hip started aching the other day.  Only when I would lift my leg (for instance, as if to high step, or lift it to get into the car).  At first it didn’t really bother me.

Then it started to get worse.  Lifting my leg to get into the car is extremely painful, and even walking has started to hurt.

I’ve had this before, so it’s not pregnancy related.  Last time, my doctor ended up handing me some samples of Celebrex.  They worked rather well.

However, in light of two things, 1) I’m pregnant now, and I don’t think Celebrex is good for a pregnant woman, and 2) at this point I don’t think Celebrex is good for anyone, wasn’t it one of those drugs that they tried to take off the market because it caused heart problems or something??

Anyway, all I can do at this point is take some tyl*enol and and slather some icy hot on my hip and try not to move very much.  I got some rather shitty sleep last night since I coulnd’t seem to find a position that would be comfortable for long with my poor, achey hip.  I really hope this goes away soon.
😕

preggo brain: 1, car: 0

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

Being monsoon season, it rained yesterday.

Earlier that day, I had gone down to the yarn shop to get some yarn for a baby blanket or two, and to remind the ladies that I would still like to work there, darn it!!

Anyway, I rolled the passenger side window down a bit when I went inside, and left it down on the drive home.  It was only cracked like maybe, two inches, if that.

I parked the car in the driveway at home, went inside and went about my business.  I noticed it started raining.  Really hard.  So, I stood slack-jawed at the window, watching how hard the rain was coming down.  (Shut up. We’re in the desert.  Rain is an amazing thing to watch, especially in the desert.  Nearly everyone here does it, too.  I mean, it only happens a few times in a year. So we gotta watch it!)  It didn’t even occur to me that the window was still open on my car.

I went to the back door to watch how the wind was whipping the pool water into a frenzy.  I got a chair, sat down and started knitting while watching the rain fall.

Josh comes out, peeks outside the front door (I couldn’t open it before as the wind was driving the rain to the south/southeast, nearly horizontally, so that if we opened the door, it would come into the house, even under the porch).  He says, “um, babe, did you know your passenger side window is still open??”

SHIT!  I jump up and start looking for an umbrella.  The rain is STILL coming down really hard.

Realize umbrellas (both of them) are still in the truck.  Which is also in the driveway.  CRAP!

Remember that we still have some rain slickers from when we went to Universal Studios a few years ago (or maybe it was Disneyland) and it rained most of the time we were there.  Grabbed one, dashed outside.  Rain still has not let up.  Carefully run to the car and jump in (soaking the driver-side in the process).  Put key in the ignition and turn it enough to bring up the power, and roll up the window (power windows, naturally).  Look at the inside of my poor car and how soaked the seat is, the dash and the floor.  Sigh, and scramble out of the car and head back to the house.  By now the lower 8” of my jeans’ legs are soaked too.  My sandals are all squidgey, so I take them off at the door, take off the slicker and go hang it in the shower, then change into dry jammies.

I blame preggo brain for this.  I am almost 99% sure I would have thought about my car’s windows in ordinary circumstances.  Or, if not, I certainly would have realized it was still down a LOT sooner than 20 some minutes into a downpour, AFTER having it brought to my attention by my husband.  :red:

Once the rain finally let up, I went to go get dinner, and brought a bunch of paper towels with me so I could at least wipe down the dash and door panels.  Then when I went to get lunch this morning, it was literally a sauna inside… the windshield was steamed up, and as soon as I sat down inside, my sunglasses even steamed over.  Yuck.

Later today, I noticed that the rain, having been practically horizontal, had even made it to the center of the dash (the console with the gauges is in the center of the car on an Ion).  I had only wiped down the water I could see, so I guess maybe that section had mostly dried.  What gave it away today was the water spots.

So, my poor car got an unwanted bath on the inside, which, as I’ve said, I’m blaming on preggo-brain.  Josh joked that the baby is probably a girl, and is sucking away all my brain cells for herself, since a lot of guys tend to lack in the brain department.  I just kind of laughed, although after thinking about it, since it’s HIS spawn, it could go either way since he’s pretty damn smart as it is, so I would hope that, girl or boy, she/he’s just as smart as as her/his daddy.  😉

I think he was just voicing his hope that it’s a girl, though. 😉

great with lime…

Saturday, June 18, 2005

I feel bad for Josh.  Finding somewhere to eat where the both of us can get what we want has become a pain.  I have a huge aversion to beef right now.  I can eat some chicken, although after a few bites of it I want nothing to do with it… Turkey is okay so far, I can eat a little more of it than chicken.  Bacon & ham make my stomach roil… about the only meaty food that doesn’t turn me off right now, is fish.

Well, I should be more specific.  White fish (like in fish sticks), or tuna.

So when it’s time to eat at work, the old question comes up… What am I in the mood for?  My answer is usually, “definitely nothing with beef!”, which eliminates a lot of choices.  El Paso BBQ is nothing but beef and pork.  They have chicken dishes and a salmon salad, but neither sounds appealing to me.  In-n-Out is obviously, out, as it’s nothing but burgers (although I do like their fries and shakes still).  Carrabba’s used to be OK, but when I tried it yesterday, even their regular spaghetti started to make me queasy.  I thought I’d be Ok just picking off the meat sauce, but apparently the smell was a little too strong.  I may try to get it sans meat if we try it again, though.

And then I found out last Tuesday, after eating half of a Del Taco spicy jack quesadilla (along with a plain bean & cheese burrito and part of a fish taco), that baby sure hates spicy food!  I didn’t get sick but felt so shitty that I couldn’t even sit in my office and browse web sites or play any games, or even knit.  All I wanted to do is lay down and sleep.. I ended up taking a 2.5 hr nap, after which I felt better, although still a little bleh, just not as bad as before the nap.

McDonald’s is cool, as I can either get a Filet-O-Fish or a McChicken grill, and their fruit & walnut salad.  Sonic is cool, as I can get either a chicken sandwich or grilled cheese.  Then Wendy’s as I can get a baked potato…

And then there’s Chipotle.  I used to get steak burrito bols.  (yes, “bowl” with out the “w”).  Since the idea of me eating steak now causes me to eye the trash can in earnest, that leaves chicken or pork.  I’m not sure about pork yet (other than ham & bacon), but I’m steering away from it for now, just in case. And their chicken?  It’s charbroiled.  I hated that flavor before (especially when the “char” is a little generous), and I dislike it even more now.  So that leaves the veggie bol, but I don’t like green peppers or onions, either.  So I guess it’s rice, cheese, sour cream & lettuce until my old tastes return.

I’ve gone bland!!  The only tastes that appeal to me are starchy foods, and so far fruits and vegatables (like broccoli and carrots, lettuce, etc) are still fine for my tummy, too.  Maybe I’ll start buying protein bars or something, as I know there is no way I’m getting enough protein with my aversion to half the meats I used to eat.

Anyway, today I had Rubio’s fish tacos.  They had some spice on them, but hopefully baby won’t mind this time and I won’t be wanting to crawl under my desk to sleep it off like some weird hangover.

At least with the nausea (which is more evident at night), I’m not stuffing myself with food, so I’ve maybe gained only 1 lb so far, even with eating a diet that’s about 90% carbohydrate foods.  Ok, so maybe 90% is a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much.  Crackers, macaroni & cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, fruit, potatoes… with an occassional chicken or fish sandwich tossed in here or there (with bread-more carbs!)... Yeah, not by much.

Ah well.  Hopefully the nausea will let up in a few weeks so I can start eating a little more normally.

(edited to modify some slight exaggerations.. I don’t really gag at the smell of beef, but it is by no means appetizing at this point.  I can go into an establishment that serves it, the smell may be a little off to me, but as long as I don’t try to eat any, I’ll be ok.)

we bid her adieu…

Tuesday, April 05, 2005

I took little green car to the car doctor yesterday, as her a/c wasn’t blowing as cold as it used to.. I also had them check her brakes while she was in the air, as there have been issues with the rotors warping.

The diagnosis?  The compressor on the a/c is shot.. it runs but isn’t pumping.  The rotors are again warped, and also needed new pads on the front.

Total estimated cost of the above repairs?

$1500.

Little green car’s Kelly Blue Book value is only $1250 on a good day.  If I were to have chosen to get the a/c fixed, and the brakes, that plus what I spent getting it tuned up a couple weeks ago and new tires, would have totaled about $2100.  Somehow it just doesn’t feel right, spending more money to get a car fixed that it is even worth.

Sooo…. Josh and I mulled it over, and decided to drive her down to Saturn to inquire how much they would give us for her in trade for a new car.  Sales manager looked her over, took her out for a spin, and stamped “$1500” on the paper.  (note: I did NOT tell them about the a/c compressor nor the brakes)  She marked A/C = cool (note: it did run cool, just not frigid like it used to), and I made sure they knew about the brand-friggin-new tires.

So, after a little bit more mulling over, quick finance calculating in my head about how much a new car payment will take away from paying down credit cards…... we decided to trade her in.  A/C is almost an absolute must in Phoenix, especially if one drives 45 miles ONE-way in the middle of the day, when temperatures are approaching their highest.  Oh, and I forgot to mention, that the thermometer on the car was also found to be cracked a while back, which regulates when the fan turns on… That was going to cost us over $200 to replace, so bring that total to $2300 to get the green car back in optimal working condition.  Neeeoope.  Not gonna happen.

So, rather than spending more than $1500 (in one chunk) to get the car fixed, we traded her in, getting that much toward the new car, and paid another $1500 as a down payment.  And get this.. we managed to get 0% financing!!  I swear my jaw hit the floor when they told us that, we’ve never gotten that low before (the VUE is at 9.9% I think).

I suppose you’re probably wondering which car we decided to buy, eh?

non-drowsy, my ass!

Wednesday, March 16, 2005

Ok, so it doesn’t exactly say “non-drowsy” on the box, but if it’s a med for daytime, you’d think they’d make it non-drowsy!!

I’m talking about an allergy/sinus med.  All the rain we got recently is making some trees go absolutely NUTS with the pollenation, and rather than making me sneezy, I got a massive sinus headache and so much sinus pressure I swear my head was gonna burst.  So I bought some allergy/sinus stuff and the headache has gone and the pressure has eased up (but not completely gone).

And now I’m about ready to fall face forward on my keyboard and snooze away…  I guess it’s a good thing I opted to hang out at work for 2 hrs longer than normal so I don’t have to waste gas driving all the way home, then halfway back across town to sign our mortgage re-fi docs…  I don’t know that I would have made it home without dozing off.  :gulp:

wart.  Wart!!

Monday, March 14, 2005

Bleh.  So the dr’s verdict is, it’s a wart.  Pooey.

Oh yeah, I hadn’t brought it up here before, had I?  Heh.

Anyway, small growth on my left index finger.  Figured it was a wart, but dr confirmed.

Then proceeded to freeze it with liquid nitrogen.  Then put some sort of “blistering agent” on it, then a band-aid.  Said to take band-aid off in about 4 hrs, and come back in 4 weeks for another treatment.  Whee!

Josh said I should just try an over-the-counter treatment rather than pay another $25 to go back to the dr in 4 weeks.  I may try it out, but if it doesn’t work, I’ll go back to the dermatologist for another freeze.

Since I figured that is what it was, I’ve been careful not to touch ppl or things with the part of the finger that has the wart, since they are contagious.  So if you ever see me doing stuff sans my left index finger (i.e. holding it away from the rest of my hand, much like one would do with the pinky finger while drinking tea), that is why.  :-(

But anyway.. now my finger hurts after the freezing & blister stuff.  Since the band-aid is still on I don’t even know what it looks like now.  Before they put the band-aid on I caught a glimpse of it and it was white (from being frozen), but it’s prolly all red & angry now.

So, anyone have any suggestions for an over-the-counter treatment that works? I haven’t tried any yet but I’ve heard some are a waste of money…

off to a rocky start…

Saturday, January 01, 2005

I hope what happened this morning doesn’t set the tone for 2005 for us.

Josh either got food poisoning or the flu early this morning.

The timing is about right for food poisoning… he ate at about 7:00-8:00pm last night and the sickness hit at about 2:30am.  But the symptoms of food poisoning are nearly identical to the flu… Fever, chills, vomiting, liquid poo….  So, since his dad, who ate at the same restaurant, KFC—but didn’t have the popcorn chicken that Josh did—isn’t sick, we may not know for sure .  We can only assume that it may have been the popcorn chicken.

All we do know is it hit hard and fast.  He went to bed feeling fine, and two hours later he was racing to the bathroom.

We were supposed to go to work today.. but with me running on about four hours of sleep (two from the time we went to bed to when he woke up sick, and two, one-hour naps since then), and he laid up on the couch sleeping this off, that didn’t happen.

I feel bad about it, but there was no way I’d be able to make a 45 minute drive down to work on so little sleep, and then spend another 45 minutes driving back home when the shift was overwith.  Not safely, anyway.

I do plan on notifying that restaurant that their food may have made him sick, just in case it is food poisoning and they get other reports of it.  I also got the number for the health department and will likely be calling them on Monday.

I hope everyone else’s new year is starting off better than ours did.

leaving scuff marks on the floor…

Wednesday, December 22, 2004

I’ve been damn tired today.

I bought a waterless vaporizer from Vicks, and it has a “soothing” green nightlight.

The first night I used it (Monday), it wasn’t so bad.  I slept ok.

Last night, however, I woke up at 11pm, then again at 1am, 2am & 3am, and finally at 4am.  I think I fell asleep around 9:30-10ish, so by those estimates, I think I got only two hours of uninterrupted sleep.  The rest of my night was puncuated by hourly opening of the eyes to check the clock and make sure I wasn’t oversleeping.

I really hate that.

So yeah, I’m dragging my feet today as a result.  I guess the “soothing” light from the vaporizor probably bothered me more than I figured it would.  So tonight I’ll go without it and hope for more restful sleep.  Besides, I have to wonder if it did little more than make our bedroom smell like a medicine cabinet.  I think the mentholated breathe-right strips will probably do OK on their own in keeping me breathing freely throughout the night.
