On ice
They must’ve fixed the air conditioning at work or something. The last two days it’s been freeeezing in here. I’m talking, cold enough that my fingers were getting too stiff to type and my fingernails had a tinge of blue in them. Cold enough that going outside at lunch to sit on a bench in 100 degree weather actually felt good.
I think tomorrow I’m bringing a blanket or a sweater or something. I wore a 3/4 sleeve shirt today but it still wasn’t enough to keep me warm.
Brrr!
the plague has arrived
Ok, not really The Plague, but it may as well be.
I’m talking about mosquitos. They’ve been plaguing the building at work. Yuck.
I’ve killed several over the last couple of weeks, and building management claims they’re getting some exterminators out to take care of it.
In the meantime, we were asked to do a few things to help eliminate them. You know, the usual, don’t leave standing water around, don’t hold the exterior doors open, the usual stuff.
But then they added this:
Remove any live plants from your work area.
Um. Wha?
Sorry, but I’ve never known live plants to be the culprit when it comes to attracting mosquitos.
Ahem. People attract mosquitos, dummies! They could give a shit about plants!! Except male mosquitos, but those don’t bite!! These things dive-bombing our heads? Those are females, and they only drink blood. Humans = food to them. NOT plants!
So by that logic, we should be removing ourselves from the office. No food source? No mosquitos!
Hmm. I don’t think that will go over well, though.
working for the weekend…
I’ve been back at work for three weeks now.
Hating every minute of it. Every. Minute.
Not so much the work itself, it’s still the same ol’ crap, but the shift I’m on… In order to accomodate childcare (graciously volunteered by Gram TJ - we’re ever so grateful!!), I need to work 6a-3p and J works 3p-12a, M-F.
Needless to say, it’s a very rough adjustment. We only see each other in passing during the week, when he comes in and I’m walking out the door, and for a few minutes on the two days that our daughter needs to make the trip to work with him when Gram is unavailable. We have our weekends together, but they seem so damn short. That comes from having worked a four-day work week for so long. We were spoiled with three day weekends… We want them back!!
There are pros and cons to trying to go back on the four-day work week on swing shift. We’d work opposite shifts to accomodate the childcare, since it would be on the overlapping Wednesdays and because we would be working late, would likely need to be an overnight thing (unless Gram wants me coming by at 10pm on the days she watches Z…), so we wouldn’t have weekends together anymore. We would, however, be on the same sleep schedule again, so that could partially make up for the lack of same-weekends..
Plus, we could possibly put the squirt to bed an hour later (she goes to bed at 10p right now) on the nights we watch her, it will make for not-quite-so-early mornings.. Although we are infinitely grateful that she is sleeping 7-9 hours a night! (Everyone at work seems to be amazed by that.. I guess for most of the ppl here who have kids, the sleeping through the night thing didn’t start happening until later on.. HAHA! Hail the power of the swaddle!)
Probably the biggest con of this will be that J is out of personal time already this year, and to avoid going 40 hrs into the red for next year (which is what happened this year), in his current department, his manager allowed him to trade overtime for time off. Since their department isn’t ever going back to 4-day work weeks, J would have to come back to my department, and the manager of this department tends to be weird about those kinds of arrangements. Although, strangely enough, I am leaving 2 hours early today and since he knew I worked through most of my lunches this week (going out long enough to grab food, come back and eat it while working, except one day where I wasn’t able to get away to get food at all), he OK’d me not using personal time for the two hours I won’t be here for today, and instead using the hours worked thru lunch to cover them…
Maybe he’s beginning to see he needs to start being flexible to keep everyone from looking for another job? There are already two ppl leaving in less than two weeks, and a third left last week… We’re severly understaffed and it was so busy this week and last that the rest of us started grumbling about how we’re hurting for bodies and it’s enough to make us start looking elsewhere for work… I guess the mumblings got back to management and they’re starting to realize they can’t continue to be completely inflexible with us, else we’ll start leaving in droves.
Anyway, where was I?
Oh yeah, I hate this shift. But, I’m leaving early today. Yay! More time to spend with my sweet girl! She’s growing up so fast…
Fridays suck.
I hate Fridays. Really, I do.
For one thing, because it’s not really MY Friday. Not at work.
Secondly, because Fridays, of all days, tend to be overly busy at work.
I’ve complained about it on here before.
You customers should be out boozing it up, for crying out loud. It’s Friday! Go party! Worry about your troubles on Monday, for the love of pete! That way it’s not MY problem. Heh.
stupid frickety-frackety computers!
My work PC is pissing me off. Yesterday it was working just peachy. I come in today, and THIS starts popping up:
svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at “xxxxxxxx” referenced memory at “xxxxxxxxx”. The memory could not be “written”.
And it won’t quit. We thought it may be the physical RAM, so we tried booting the system with one stick at a time. Popped up with either stick installed. I ran Ad*Aware and Spy*bot. Reboot. Still happening. Realized my sound card driver escaped at some point. Reinstalled sound card driver, reboot. STILL happening.
It’s really not affecting how my system is running, (except for the “themes” in WinXP.. the start bar is on “classic” mode, while my application windows are on XP’s “new” themes), but it is down right annoying. The window is “always to the front” of the others, so I have to move it all the way to the bottom of the screen and off a bit so it’s out of the way.. until a new one feels like popping up, then I have to move it again. Grrr.
And I still have to work tomorrow, too. I’m supposed to check what kind of hard drive it has installed in it before I leave tonight, and then leave it on the desk of a week-day shift lead so he can try to re-image the hard drive to see if that fixes it. If it doesn’t, then the HD is possibly dying. Oh goodie. Stupid IBM crap.
/end rant
it’s Friday, for crying out loud.. go have a beer!!
What’s with the busy Friday nights here? Why don’t you* people go out and have a beer and just ignore your stupid business data circuits for the weekend for pete’s sake!
This just isn’t right. 😠
* = refers to our customers, of course, not you, dear readers!
lay the funk down…
Someone totally crop-dusted the hallway at work earlier this afternoon. The offender was nowhere in sight (naturally), but day-am!
If you’re gonna do that, could ya at least do it where not many ppl travel??
head scratcher…
How is that our company, whose name maybe only 3 out of 10 people have heard of, is still struggling with finances…. Yet, we have some majorly successful companies* as our customers, whose names even an eskimo in an igloo would know, and we’re not close to breaking even?? I just don’t understand it.
❓
zero tact…
Someone at work just got slammed onto my shit-list this morning.
He done messed with the wrong bitch. Prick.
change of schedule…
The reason my ailing little green saturn needed to be repaired is because starting next Tuesday, Josh’s schedule has been moved from the one we’re on (wed-Sat, 6a-4p), to M-F, 10a-7p. He’s getting Monday off so he can have some semblance of a weekend since he still had to work today.
And my manager couldn’t be bothered with being nice and letting me move to the same shift so Josh & I could continue to carpool. Hence, the tuneup for my car so I can drive it to & from work again.
The morning commute won’t be so bad, as traffic isn’t usually too heavy at 5am, but the afternoon is going to be rather hellish. Rush hour seems to start at around noon here, and doesn’t let up until about 7pm. As it is, it takes us an hour to get home during the week, and that’s with being able to use the carpool lane on about 70% of the freeways we take. When driving by my or his lonesome, it climbs up to 1.25 - 1.5 hrs. Yuck!
I’m not looking forward to this. It’s about three weeks until the next schedule change (where we hope to be put on the same shift again, and hopefully on a swing shift), but frankly that’s three weeks too long. Bleh.
