on MT..

Saturday, May 15, 2004
My initial reaction was much the same as a lot of people's when I first read about MT3.0... $100 (normal price) for only 3 authors & 5 weblogs is a stiff price to pay for the limited number... I currently have two authors & three weblogs. Sometimes I create another author for test purposes, but I suppose that wouldn't really count as an "author" unless it was used on a regular basis... But if I were to purchase MT3.0 and someday decide to do a guest post thing like some people do, that would fill up the limit, and that would just leave me with an uncomfortable feeling.

And the free version having only 1 author & 3 blogs.. Well, using that version would mean I'd have to install two copies just for Josh & I to continue to use updated versions... (not that I've upgraded this one to 2.661.. and oh, look, now I can't unless someone has a copy laying around to send me!) I don't know if installing two copies in the same public_html directory but in different sub-folders would have any adverse affects or not.. and I'm not sure I'd want to risk trying it...

So anyway, when I heard through the grapevine that pMachines was doing a promotion to give away 1000 free copies of Expression Engine, I jumped at the chance and signed up. I got my e-mail this afternoon, letting me know I won and can download my copy. So I did.

But, now Six Apart has listened to the masses, and has adjusted their pricing structure for the personal license. Upped the lowest version of the paid personal license to 5 authors, 5 weblogs. A little more room to move, but still limiting. Expression Engine is unlimited in both.

I am going to be installing EE over the weekend. Mainly, I'm tempted by the lure of "no rebuilding, updating is dynamic & on the fly". I hate that MT has to rebuild, especially if I want to change the layout of the page (I don't have skinning implemented yet). It takes several minutes now to rebuild the whole site, and I still only have less than 300 entries in my blog. I can't imagine how long it takes for you people who have multiple years of entries! Gosh that must take forever!

So, in the interest of experimentation, I'll be installing EE, to try it out, get a feel for it. To see whether we like it better than MT, to see what its limitations may be. I'll definitely leave this copy of MT running in case things go horribly wrong or I just don't like EE. I'll make another entry here when I've tinkered around with EE enough to give an opinion on it.

*grumble*

Thursday, May 13, 2004
Sorry about the test post, folks. At some point yesterday the perms on important files that MT needs to write to got dinked with and it done screwed everything up. I think it's fixed now, but it was downright annoying. Perm denied everytime we tried to save an entry. Bah!

bleh

Wednesday, May 12, 2004
It's probably a bad thing to be feeling so apathetic about work when one has around 14 trouble tickets to look at, and only 2 hours until the morning meeting, when said tickets would be sent on to the next shift to be worked on...

Bleh. Just bleh.

something was definitely watching over him

Tuesday, May 11, 2004
When I went to go get dinner last night, I noticed I had a missed call & voice mail on my cell phone.

I listened to the message...

It was from my brother.

knitted things

Saturday, May 08, 2004
Here are some pics of some things I've been knitting..

The first one is my first attempt at socks. I've gotten much further than what is in the pic, and I'm quickly finding that I do not like the pattern instructions that were included with the yarn. I am thinking about pulling it all out and trying to knit them toe-up, as I saw at Mac's. I might be hollerin' for help on this one if I run into trouble, Mac, since it sounds like you love the toe-up pattern. :o)

The second is the baby blanket I'm working on for my sister's baby. I also have more done on it, and it's coming along fairly quickly now that I've got the stitches right.

The third is a phone cozy that I made for my cell phone. Pattern from my head, and damned if I could remember it all now to write it down. D'oh!

The fourth is one of the blankets I'm trying to do for the Critter Knitters Knit-a-thon. The last one is a close-up of it. Two strands of yarn, heather grey & country blue. It's about 5"-6" shy of being done I think. (2ft x 2ft).

I’m not a spammer…

Friday, May 07, 2004
...but I play one on TV.

Seriously, though, one of my Yahoo e-mail addresses has been shanghai'd and is being used in sending spam. My account hasn't been compromised, but the address has.

Ironically, it's the account I created to use when I sign up on miscellaneous web sites and don't want to RECEIVE spam at my main e-mail account.

Even better, it's being used to proliferate some sort of worm or trojan. Nice, eh?

How did I discover this, you may ask? Simple. Hundreds of bounced messages (from mail servers reporting accounts that no longer exist), as well as the worms being sent BACK to my yahoo address.

Damn spammers. Damn worm/virus/trojan makers. Now my poor little Yahoo e-mail address is forever tainted.
