SQUEEEEEE-SQUEEEEE!!!!
That’s what we woke up to. No, not our regular alarm clock, but an alarm of a different kind.
Yes folks, that was the sound of all of the smoke alarms in our house freaking out all at once. We’re pretty sure it was all of them, because as soon as the one in our bedroom freaked out, I was up & out of bed and opening the door, and heard the delayed echo of the others chiming in. (we were already sort of awake from the alarm clock, I just hit snooze alot on our days off) Also, the cats were in the hallway, waiting for us to wake up & leave the bedroom (our bedroom door is always closed, the kitties aren’t allowed in there), and there is a smoke alarm in the hallway. They were pretty freaked out, too, because it’s right above their heads, and while the rest of the rooms in the house are vaulted ceilings, the hallway isn’t. So, there is less air space for the sound of that alarm to spread out, and as a result, it sounds, much, much louder in the hallway.
But they only sang their chorus once, and then it was overwith. I went around the house checking rooms (feeling door handles for heat, of course. Except I forgot to do that when I left our bedroom in such a hurry) for signs of smoke. There was none, so we figured there may have been a brown-out, since sometimes they all screech after power is restored (they take their main power from the house and batteries are their backup).
No smoke, and we’re not sure about brown-out. There was no long power loss because all of our clocks are still set correctly, and the desktop computers are still on. Veeery strange.
It also wasn’t one of them crying out for a battery replacement, because that’s a very different sound. That is just a single, loud, “BEEEP!!” And about a minute later, it repeats itself. “BEEEEP!!” And continues until you open the battery compartment.
This was different.
Nothing like waking up to an alarm that’s about 10 times louder than your alarm clock, and sets your heart racing a million times a minute.
I just hope this doesn’t start happening more often. We’re having enough trouble with our garage door opener, we don’t need a mystery with our smoke alarms, too.
*sniffle* *sniffle* *cough*
Dammit.
Seems like I’m coming down with something. Started with my sinuses spontaneously trying to drain from my right nostril, yet at the same time be stuffed, last night as we got ready for bed.
Still sniffly & stuffy this morning, but figured it would pass.
But as the hours & minutes tick by here at work, the sniffling isn’t letting up (I’ve actually got a raw spot on my nose from all the tissue wiping), I’m feeling warm to the touch, a little dizzy here & there, and I can feel it moving into my chest.
Grrr…
So, going home early, we will be doing.
Bah!
lofty ideas…
As I sit here on my last day of work for the week, with five hours to go, I am perusing Stockstash.com in search of images. Images that I think I may want to use for designing skins for my site.
I had the fleeting thought of setting a goal to create one new design each month, one that fits with that month’s “personality”, (i.e., December = Christmas, January = winter, August = summer/hot, etc.), but I don’t know if I’d be able to stick to it.
So I’ll take it by baby-steps. If I redesign for a particular month, cool. If not, no big whoop.
I’m starting with January, and so far have found some pretty neat winter scenes, with snow, even! So what if we don’t get much of that in Phoenix, or that I don’t particularly care to be around snow, but it certainly looks pretty.
I think I have enough of those, so, on to February. Roses, chocolates… Let’s see what I can find. 😊
hooray for free turkeys!
Our local grocery store, Basha’s, does a “free turkey” thing every year before Thanksgiving.. If you spend between $250 - $399 between Oct 6 - Nov 9, you can get a free 10-14 lb Jennie-O Turkey (frozen), or a free Frozen Honeysuckle White Bone-in Turkey Breast, or $7.00 Off any Butterball Turkey….
If you spend over $400 (in the same time span as above), you can get a free 16-22lb Jennie-O Turkey (frozen), or a a free frozen Honeysuckle White Bone-in Turkey Breast, or $10.00 off any Butterball Turkey.
We go for the free Jennie-O turkey rather than the partial turkey or coupon.
Last year we were eligible for the 10-14lb turkey.
This year we’ve hit the mark for the 16-22lb turkey..
Yay, free large turkey!
Of course, we’re probably going to have someone else cook it, as I can’t cook a turkey worth a damn. Ends up dryer than a bone.
Hey, Ma! Want a free turkey to cook for T-day this year?! 😉
she’s a klutz, she is…
Have I ever mentioned here how much of a royal klutz I am?
Here, let me give a few examples:
- - I’ve dropped a full plate of linguine a la marinara, sauce side down, on the living room carpet (well, the noodles & sauce slid off the plate. The plate remained fimrly in my grip).
- - Just recently, a little dixie cup of ranch dressing (you know, the kind you get from ma&pa pizza joints), decided to make a suicide jump from the plate I was carrying from the living room to the kitchen… onto the carpet.
- - My cell phone, and several of its predecessors, have tried to flee my grip on more than one occassion. Like today, out of my purse, into my hand, and straight to the floor. I don’t think I’ve owned a single cell phone that I didn’t drop at least twice while it was in my possession.
That’s all I can think of at the moment, but they’re pretty major.
Just call me Miss Butterfingers.
run. run as fast as you can…
Too bad it takes several years and a whole lotta red tape to immigrate to another country.
The thought to move to, oh, Canada or England has crossed my mind as I look at the stats in Ohio.
(and no, the above “oh, Canada” was not a poke at their national song. I didn’t even realize it came out that way when I wrote it until I re-read it… it is meant as “for instance”.)
Ok, so because Kerry conceded, OH auto-magically gives up and hands over the EVs to Bush. Oh goody. Who cares about the provisional voters and absentee voters. Probably wouldn’t have made a difference, anyway.
Frankly, I think if it weren’t for the EC, there would be little question who won. By a margin of
Three million is a LOT of people. That’s more than the population of Phoenix and its ‘burbs. Even if there was a question of “there are still provisional & absentee votes to count!”, it still wouldn’t add up to four million. For instance, with Ohio’s missing provisional & absentee votes, which account for approximately 150,000 votes, even being optimistic there may only be 50% of those voting for Kerry, which would still leave Bush in the lead. Because his lead is at about 130,000.
This just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Especially if much of the rest of the world was hoping to be rid of Bush and his administration.
So much for saving face this election. So, rest of the world? Carry on with the smearing of the U.S., because obviously we could care less if our leader makes us look like a bunch of assholes, since the majority of us voted to keep him in office.
All I can say is, I voted for Kerry. Can I flee the country now?
my duty is done…
After 1 hr & 20 minutes, my vote is cast.
Why don’t all states have ballots like AZ? All we do is take a black marker and draw a line to make an arrow whole (like connect-the-dots) for the person you’re voting for. Simple, nothing to hang off the page. Eh.
Off to play some more World of Warcraft. 😊
miscellaneous notes to self…
While I wait for my copy of World of Warcraft closed-stress-beta to install…
...299 stitches on a size 15 needle does NOT equal six feet. More like ten feet.
...banana bread is best when made with overripe bananas. Stupid recipe just said ripe bananas. I’ve made banana bread before, like over 10 years ago… So I had a feeling overripe bananas were in order, but I only had one and it didn’t equal the cup I needed, so I put in the fridge (after being peeled & mashed) so I could try to “age” another banana. But the next day after checking the nanner in the fridge, it was already browning & oozing so I threw it away and just used “ripe” bananas thinking since the recipe called for just “ripe” bananas it would be ok…
Well, it’s still banana bread, but not as dark and flavorful as it would have been if I’d used overripe bananas. So I get to let a couple more sit for a week and try again next Monday or Tuesday.
Damn, isn’t that installation done yet?? A little over half-way. It sure is taking its sweet time!
Let’s see, what else…
...gotta go out and vote today. Our polling place is in a retired folks community. In their yacht club conference room. I do believe this is the same place that a man freaked out and shot two of the board members a few years ago. April 2000, in fact. It may not be the same room, but it’s definitely the same place. Was looking for articles on it, the ones I found with a quick search only state one person died, but actually two died. The second died a day or two or more after she was admitted to the hospital. The shooter got the death sentence for the crime. Heck, I even found a website that lists death-row inmates in AZ. He’s the second one on the page. HOAs can be evil, but he really just took things too far.
Oh look, the install is almost done! Yay!! Just a few minutes more I think.
super charged…
Does anyone else get super-statically-charged?
Everywhere I go, the moment I touch something metal, ZAP!
I spend 45-50 minutes in the car going to work, climb out and gather my things (knitting bag, purse), reach for the door to close it, and ZAP!!
Yeah, I’m one of those people who would probably go up in a ball of flame while pumping gas if I didn’t ground myself beforehand.
It’s also the reason why I no longer have anything to do with hardware upgrades on my computers. I think I’ve fried at least three sound cards, and one of them I didn’t even open the case! It was when we moved from our last apartment to our house, I carried my computer from the apt to the truck, then from the truck to the house. Hooked up the computer, and lo and behold, no sound. Yeah, I’m talented like that.
But anyway… anyone else have issues with static electricity?
it’s gone downhill…
Every time I visit Class*mates.com, there is less and less that’s available to non-Gold members. It’s pretty sad, really.
Back when I first signed up, a non-paying member could post on the message boards, see the link to a class*mate’s website if they posted it, see their photo if they posted it, and I think even send a message via class*mates to a friend if they were registered at the site.
Now, that’s all gone, you have to fork out what, almost $40 a year to be able to do all of that? Or $60 for two years. Still pretty lame. I know the place has to make a profit somehow, but c’mon. All we get now is the ability to see whether an old friend is registered, and a brief teaser about a few of them:
- Describe your political views: It depends on the issue
- Kind of pet(s) you have: Fish
- Country you live in today: UNITED STATES
- Highest Education Level: Some college
- How you stay in touch with school friends: Other
Big whoop!
edited to add: btw, that wasn’t from my profile, but a random classmate I picked for an example
