power outage

Thursday, November 20, 2003
We lost power this morning, probably around 6AM. I think it lasted around 40 minutes or so, because the little clock on my desk is flashing "4:00" so it's been four hours since power restored, and I woke up at 6 after hearing the smoke detectors let out their little squeaks saying that main power is gone, so "now we're on battery power". At first I thought one of their batteries died (because that tends to happen in the dead of night), but then I realized I couldn't see the alarm clocks.

I think that also the fact that I couldn't hear any ambient noise produced when the power is on helped wake me as well..

Does anyone else get woken up when the power goes off in the middle of the night just for sheer lack of ambient noise? Just curious. Gotta get ready for work now.

now that that is done…

Ok, I feel better now.

Today being my middle-of-the-week day off, I drove to Barnet-Dulaney-Perkins to return a refund check that they had mailed to me. (it was a double refund.. unfortunately I am an honest person and made sure they were aware of it)

While I was out, I stopped by Jutenhoops (sp?) on Camelback, because I know they carry dragon sculptures there. They had three curios full of them by various artists... I was mainly studying them, how different artists interpret how a dragon should look and whatnot. I noticed that many of them give dragons opposable thumbs on the front paws, which is what I do as well. It just makes sense, else how are they supposed to grab the virgins left for sacrifice and bite their little heads off grab nifty jewels or spheres?

Feh. There were plenty of pretty ones, and just as many ugly ones. While I haven't mastered making a dragon with scales all over its body, I still think the one I'm working on currently is better than most of those I saw today. So I'm tooting my own horn, sue me. ;o) I'll post a pic of the one I'm working on when its done. I know I said I expected to have it done like last Saturday or the one before, but I was lazy. It's nearly finished, I just have to attach its wings and re-bake it... and the dragon itself will be done. Then I'll have to make an "environment" for it, 'cause it'll look a little strange if I don't (it's pose).

Time to go watch some television before bed.

Reorganizing

I'm doing some reorganizing of posts in my blog.. I made a protected folder for especially incriminating work rants, so if you want to be able to read them you'll need the username and password for that directory.

e-mail me if you want it, but be forwarned, I won't be giving it out to just anyone. I prefer that you already have a blog that either I visit already, or that I can go visit to get an idea of your character before giving the password. Basically, I want to make sure you don't work for my company (one person excluded, and you know who you are). If you don't have a blog, e-mail me and I'll mull it over carefully. But don't be too offended if I say no.

Oh, and special thanks to D for her tutorial on how to set this up!

The hornets' nest has been stirred up, and lots of hornets are getting really pissed off.

That's all I will say for now.

So sad..

Car fire.

I saw this on the way to work yesterday, since my place of employment is off of Ray Rd and the I-10. When I saw the smoke on the horizon I knew right away it was a car fire. As I passed the accident (it was on the opposite side of the freeway), I think I caught a glimpse of a figure in the driver's seat of the burning car. I only glanced (had to pay attention to the cars in front of me, you know), so I am not sure. But after reading that two ladies died in that accident, what I saw in my fleeting glance might be correct.

Very, very sad.

What makes me angry about this accident, is that the whole cause of the accident was the person driving the Neon, who decided to stop IN THE FAST LANE rather than pull off to the side when they got a flat tire.

I'm not basing the statement that they were in the fast lane based on the article, I saw with my own eyes that they were NOT in the emergency breakdown lane. The accident was in the fast lane, because if it had been in the emergency lane, I would not have been able to see the entire Intrepid from the lane I was in, the cement divider would have blocked the view.

So after learning what caused the accident, all I can think of is why did the driver in the Neon not pull into the emergency lane? They had a flat tire. Even if it blew out, (they obviously maintained enough control to bring it to a "safe" stop), they still could have managed to pull into the emergency lane. That is what that lane is for, for pete's sake. While not recommended, a car can still be driven on a flat tire, or even its rims if absolutely necessary.

Maybe the person panicked, but I mean, come on. I would like to think that if I were in a situation like that, that I'd have the presence of mind to get my ass out of immenent danger and get my car out of a lane in which most drivers speed along at 70+ mph. But I've never been in that kind of situation, so who knows.

but on a lighter note…

Wednesday, November 12, 2003
I've been talking with a local pet shop owner that I've known for a year or two, back when I was into breeding siamese fighting fish (bettas).. about getting a job at his store. I applied for work there last week, as they are short-staffed. (neither JoAnn Etc. or Michael's has called me, so my next choice was a pet store)

I called the store tonight to talk to him, to ask him if he's made a decision.. Yes, they can use my help, will probably need me to start next week sometime.

It's not really set in stone yet, but he'll call me when they want me to start working at the store.

About the only thing I'll be squeamish about having to take care of there are the tarantulas and scorpions. As of last week he only had one tarantula, and I didn't see any scorps. I let him know right up front that I don't do bugs (crickets I am ok with, I catch those in the house and toss them outside all the time). But reptiles are ok (he has quite a few snakes and lizards).

He said for the tarantulas and scorps they use tools to remove the critters when it's cage cleaning time. I guess we'll have to see what that entails before I know if it's something I'd be willing to do.

Yuck. Those two critters just give me the heebie jeebies.

pictures, many pictures..

Sunday, November 09, 2003
Well, even though we had up to four hours to wander in the Big Room and take pictures, we only spent about an hour there. Since that is a live cave, the humidity is at 98%. It was about 69 degrees inside, but with that much humidity, it feels like 80. Maybe even 85. It was quite warm. And damp.

Anyway, we got plenty of pictures. I'm not sure how many Josh took, but I took over 90. I tried deleting the really bad ones as I went along so I wouldn't have too many blurry shots to sort through later, but there are still some of those I'll have to eliminate. Most of my blurry photos are the ones where I tried using the low-light setting. A very difficult task since the shutter stays open longer and you have to hold the camera really, really still. Tripods were not allowed inside so I had to make due by propping the camera on the hand-rails and trying my best to hold it steady.

Eventually I'll sort through the pictures and post a few here. Ninety pictures is a lot to go through, folks. So don't expect any really soon. ;o)

Road Trip #2

Off to see the Grand Opening of the Big Room at Kartchner Caverns today. We get a whole four hours to roam around and take lots of pictures, although we're technically supposed to refrain from using the flash when possible. We'll see how that works on the digitals. I am pretty sure I can set mine to take low-light pictures. If not, I'll just take a few with flash.

Toodles!
