I think I’ve got a case of short-timers here…

Thursday, July 29, 2004

It’s funny.  I’m not quitting my “day” job for this second job I’ve gotten at the yarn store, but I’ve still got a pretty bad case of short-timer’s, I’m finding.

I found myself wanting to be there, learning the ropes at the yarn store, rather than here at my fulltime job, today.

I’ve not even worked 2 seconds at the yarn store, and I’m already wishing I were there as opposed to here.

I hope I enjoy working at the yarn store.  The ladies running the place seem really nice.  Even if it does mean I’ll be on my feet most of the time (I’ll be sure to wear my sneakers w/the arch support that I got while in Florida with the foot incident), it’ll be a refreshing change of pace.  And I may even get to knit, probably crochet, and do cross-stitch on occassion while working there…  I occassionally knit while I’m at work at my fulltime job, but only when it’s slow… and even then, I feel really strange doing it (as in, if a boss were to walk in and see me doing that, they’d give me the evil eye and the heebie-jeebies).  But at the yarn store, it’ll be a part of the job. 😊

To say I’m looking forward to starting work there on Monday would be stating the obvious.

Neat-O

Monday, July 26, 2004

Earlier this month I wrote an email to the manager of a LYS (local yarn store) to see if they needed any part-time help this summer.  She wrote back a couple weeks later, and said they are, they need people to work full days, who know how to knit, cross stitch, and needlepoint.  She asked me to drop by when I had an opportunity to.

I did so today.  We chatted briefly, and she asked me if I knew how to cross stitch, since I had already mentioned in my email that I knit.  I said I do know how to cross stitch.  She then asked what days I had free.  I told her Mondays & Tuesdays.  She asked me if I could start next Monday.

I told her I could.

Wages are $7/hr (or $7.50? I suddenly can’t remember), plus a 20% employee discount.

That’s not bad at all.  So I’m going to give it a whirl and see how it works out.  Since I like knitting so much, maybe I’ll really enjoy working there.  😊

kitties like yarn…

Tuesday, June 22, 2004

If I wasn’t in such a foul mood this morning, I may have actually found this a little humorous.  Who knows, maybe you will.

I was sitting here at my computer, with a newly started knitted blanket in my lap, reading some of Mac’s entries from this morning.  I suddenly felt a tugging at the knitting, but at first didn’t think anything of it.

The tugging got a little harder so I turned around, only to see one of my cats with the strand of yarn in his mouth.  The little shit was pulling the yarn out of my office, but since the skein is still way too heavy, he was merely unravelling it.  Little putz!  He was halfway down the hallway before I was able to get it loose from him.

Good thing acrylic is washable.  Icky kitty spittle.  Puey.  😕

knitted things

Here are some pics of some things I've been knitting..

The first one is my first attempt at socks. I've gotten much further than what is in the pic, and I'm quickly finding that I do not like the pattern instructions that were included with the yarn. I am thinking about pulling it all out and trying to knit them toe-up, as I saw at Mac's. I might be hollerin' for help on this one if I run into trouble, Mac, since it sounds like you love the toe-up pattern. :o)

The second is the baby blanket I'm working on for my sister's baby. I also have more done on it, and it's coming along fairly quickly now that I've got the stitches right.

The third is a phone cozy that I made for my cell phone. Pattern from my head, and damned if I could remember it all now to write it down. D'oh!

The fourth is one of the blankets I'm trying to do for the Critter Knitters Knit-a-thon. The last one is a close-up of it. Two strands of yarn, heather grey & country blue. It's about 5"-6" shy of being done I think. (2ft x 2ft).

Just pull the little string, and it all unravels..

Sunday, March 28, 2004
Well, I did it. I unravelled the baby blanket.
It was only 5 oz of yarn.
Baby blanket yarn, so it's relatively thin. Which means there's really a LOT of it.
The yarn ball I have now as a result is just huge. Maybe about the size of a small cantaloupe..

Then I started over. After casting on 146 stitches, the next six rows are purl.

For the sake of learning, I tried once again to do it the correct way... and I found that it's really not that difficult, in fact pretty easy. That doesn't mean I'm going to go the correct way with the critter blankie, because it will put two purled rows directly against one another and would look funky. No, I'll continue doing that one backwards until it's done. But for the baby blanket, I'll do it the correct way. :o)

knit to infinity…

Friday, March 26, 2004
Something I learned about the knitting I'm doing currently...

1) What I thought I was doing as a "knit" stitch, actually is a "purl" stitch...
2) And I'm doing the "purl" stitch backwards...
and
3) When I got to the end of the row doing the "purl" stitch the way I've been doing it and decided to try it the "right" way, I found that the "right" way is less graceful (at least to me).. I can go so much faster doing it the way I've been doing it, which is apparently the "wrong" way, or at least, backwards. :o)

Join the club

Monday, December 22, 2003
As if I didn't have enough hobbies already, I decided I wanted to try learning to knit. After reading through some other bloggers' knitting journals, I figured I'd give it a shot and see if it's something I'd like. I crocheted a long time ago when I was a kid, but I've never knitted before.

I chose a baby blanket for my first project. It will be for my niece when it's done. I wanted to keep it simple, as in, no sewing.

Can you believe I managed to screw it up from the very first stitch? It called for 146 stitches to be cast on... and I screwed those up. Not in the count, but in the stitch. I didn't realize until I finished all 146 stitches and tried to start the next row that I'd done the stitches completely wrong. Leave it to me to screw up casting on. Oye.

How did I screw it up? Well, instead of having a nice neat row of 146 single stitches, it looked like every stitch was doubled. (And no, I did not lose count, so hush it). I guess I looped the yarn wrong so it doubled up on the needle when it was pulled through. I'm not even sure that I could duplicate that now that I know the right way to do it.

I bought a software CD that has instructions on how to do certain stitches, and that helped, especially with the K2 tog.. I just couldn't figure that one out by looking at the instructions (there were no pictures with the pattern to help with that part), even though it is entirely logical. I still think the yarn over from purl to knit stitches is a little weird, since it appears to add a stitch, but maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Something I haven't been able to master is using my right index finger to move the yarn over the needle and stuff. I've tried but my finger just doesn't want to cooperate. So, I use my thumb & index finger together. Probably slows things down a little, but it still gets the job done.

I'll probably post a picture when I'm done with it, although that may be at least a week I think. But we'll see.
