Monday, August 02, 2004

It was actually very nice.
Laid back & relaxing atmosphere, very nice owner & manager.

I was doing peon work, but you know what?

I think I’ve got a case of short-timers here…

Thursday, July 29, 2004

It’s funny.  I’m not quitting my “day” job for this second job I’ve gotten at the yarn store, but I’ve still got a pretty bad case of short-timer’s, I’m finding.

I found myself wanting to be there, learning the ropes at the yarn store, rather than here at my fulltime job, today.

I’ve not even worked 2 seconds at the yarn store, and I’m already wishing I were there as opposed to here.

I hope I enjoy working at the yarn store.  The ladies running the place seem really nice.  Even if it does mean I’ll be on my feet most of the time (I’ll be sure to wear my sneakers w/the arch support that I got while in Florida with the foot incident), it’ll be a refreshing change of pace.  And I may even get to knit, probably crochet, and do cross-stitch on occassion while working there…  I occassionally knit while I’m at work at my fulltime job, but only when it’s slow… and even then, I feel really strange doing it (as in, if a boss were to walk in and see me doing that, they’d give me the evil eye and the heebie-jeebies).  But at the yarn store, it’ll be a part of the job. 😊

To say I’m looking forward to starting work there on Monday would be stating the obvious.

bleh

Wednesday, May 12, 2004
It's probably a bad thing to be feeling so apathetic about work when one has around 14 trouble tickets to look at, and only 2 hours until the morning meeting, when said tickets would be sent on to the next shift to be worked on...

Bleh. Just bleh.

but on a lighter note…

Wednesday, November 12, 2003
I've been talking with a local pet shop owner that I've known for a year or two, back when I was into breeding siamese fighting fish (bettas).. about getting a job at his store. I applied for work there last week, as they are short-staffed. (neither JoAnn Etc. or Michael's has called me, so my next choice was a pet store)

I called the store tonight to talk to him, to ask him if he's made a decision.. Yes, they can use my help, will probably need me to start next week sometime.

It's not really set in stone yet, but he'll call me when they want me to start working at the store.

About the only thing I'll be squeamish about having to take care of there are the tarantulas and scorpions. As of last week he only had one tarantula, and I didn't see any scorps. I let him know right up front that I don't do bugs (crickets I am ok with, I catch those in the house and toss them outside all the time). But reptiles are ok (he has quite a few snakes and lizards).

He said for the tarantulas and scorps they use tools to remove the critters when it's cage cleaning time. I guess we'll have to see what that entails before I know if it's something I'd be willing to do.

Yuck. Those two critters just give me the heebie jeebies.

part-timer

Thursday, October 16, 2003
I applied for part-time seasonal work at the JoAnn Etc. store near my house.
Mainly 'cause it would be extra money if they decide to hire me, and it's a craft store so I think it would be a good fit.

Their application is small (half a page), and all it asks for is your info (name, address, phone #), what hours you can work, and the question: Do you have any previous retail experience?

Yes, I do. But gosh, it's been like, nine years I think? I worked at a Blockbuster Video for about six months back in 1994. But it still counts, I did do retail!

Now I wonder if they're going to call me in to chat for an interview. I think it would be kind of cool to work there.

If that fails, then I'll try Michael's. It's a little further away, but I'm sure they'll need seasonal help, too.

I wonder if they pay minimum wage to part-time seasonal workers, or if the starting pay is a little more than that? Even if they do pay only minimum wage, for the hours I offered to work, it'll be an extra couple hundred dollars a month. I listed I'm willing to work in the morning on the same days I go to my regular job, as well as Saturdays. It will make for some pretty long days, but that way it still gives me at least two days off, Sunday and Wednesday.

So we'll see how that goes.

is this day over yet?

Saturday, August 30, 2003
These 12 hour work days are just too damn long.

For our next 'rotating shift' I chose a more stable shift, at least in terms of how long the days are. I selected it as my first choice, anyway. Whether or not I'll get it is another question. The shift runs 12pm - 10pm, Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri.

My second choice is the same shift I'm on (Wed-Sat, 8/10/10/12 hr days), and the last choice was a day shift, also a four day work week (6a-4pm, Wed - Sat).

While my first shift would only give me one day off to spend with Josh, at least the shift starts at the same time every day and four 10 hour days are a lot more tolerable than having to suffer through a 12 hour shift on the weekend.

Oh, looky there, it's time to go. Yay! (I started to write this abt 45 minutes ago, but got interupted by a colleague telling us about the car accident he was in last week)...

the toilets here at work, and general bathroom etiquette

Friday, August 22, 2003
The toilets at work have a flaw that I hate. The bowl is shaped just so, that if toilet tissue or what-have-you is in just the right spot, it will not go down when the toilet gets flushed. This is not the same as a clogged toilet, this stuff just simply gets stuck on a level spot in the bowl and will not go down without help. eww.

Here is where the etiquette comes in.... [this will be gross, so if you are touchy about toilet leavings and feminine hygeine products, do not read on..]

I shoulda stayed home..

Saturday, August 16, 2003
I took a couple days off this week, using one of them to help my parents do some packing. The second day I took off from work, I spent at home, playing SWG mostly. When news came of that power outage on the east coast, I imagined what it must be like at work since a lot of our customers are based on the east coast, and had a good laugh because I didn't have to endure the onslaught of tickets that we would undoubtedly get as a result of the loss of power....

I come to work today, and find that it had tripled our work load, and because it was taking time to get all power restored, I'd be stuck with some of that workload.

Yes indeed, karma can be a real bitch. Next time I suppose I shouldn't be so quick to laugh. Eh.. I'll probably laugh anyway. I'm sure my colleagues wouldn't hesitate to do the same if they were sitting comfortably at home whilst their co-workers were toiling away at work buried under a mountain of trouble tickets.

frustrating..

Wednesday, August 06, 2003
My company has a firewall set up so that many 'questionable' websites are inaccessible. 'Questionable' means anything from pr0n to gambling, and many things inbetween. This firewall will also have issues getting to otherwise legitimate sites, sites that wouldn't make anyone question the content. But for these sites, instead of getting a "denied for blah-blah" reason, it simply spits a TCP error at me. But it works just dandy if I set up my browser to use a public anonymous proxy server. D's site is one of these, where I get a TCP error but it works via the proxy. Strange stuff.
