i want to skin…

Thursday, August 19, 2004

...this blog, but after reading a bit of domesticat’s tutorial, I quickly came to the realization that the skin I have right now, is not compatible with skinning.  At least not with the tweaks that had to be done to create the look of the layout.  Slimmed down sans some graphics it could be done… but not as it is.

Maybe that’s something I’ll try to work on later this week (like on Saturday, if it’s slow at work).  I’d really like to implement skinning.

man, look at the size of those dust bunnies!

Wednesday, August 18, 2004

No, really.  Dust bunnies, like the ones you find under your bed.  They’re just everywhere around here!  (the blog, that is)

Guess that’s what happens when one doesn’t post in a while.  Heee!  😛

Anyway..  Job #2 is still going well.  We’re up to our eyeballs in boxes (we’re starting to groan when the UPS truck pulls up… ‘cause really, where does Mr. UPS think we’re going to put those huge boxes he has to haul in on a dolley?), and wishing the upstairs expansion would happen this week, rather than closer to December.  I check in yarn, price them, and put them right back into the box they came out of since there’s really no room to put them on display to sell!  Seems kind of, oh, I don’t know, pointless?  At least the felting wool is in bags so we can easily pull them out if a customer comes in looking for neat-o wool to felt with.  At $20 a hank (about 100 yds), mind you.

I am learning how to ring up customers’ purchases on a really basic cash register.  So basic that we don’t even put in the amount received for a purchase… as soon as you hit “total” the drawer opens.  If the person gives cash that isn’t exact, I have to figure out the change in my head!  I’m not terrible at math, but in a pinch my brain revolts against doing subtraction without writing it out, so I cheat and use a calculator.  :cheese:  And then, we’re supposed to count back the change in that weird way I never did pick up on when I worked at a movie theater way back in ‘93…  I think on Monday if it’s not too busy I may ask the boss lady if she can teach me how to do that.  Trust me, she will need to teach me this, because I clearly remember thinking I had the hang of it when I worked the ticket window at the movie theater, but I really didn’t because I blew it big time and gave a guy like $40 in change when he really should have only gotten $20 (I think he gave me a $50 bill), trying to count change back like that.  Yeah, my drawer was WAY off that day.  Heh.

Other than that, despite a day or two of aching feet (on Tuesdays, the checking in of yarn is done standing, since the table with chairs is filled with the Tuesday afternoon “stitch’n'bitch” ladies), I am still enjoying working there.  I got my first paycheck this week, too.  A whole $150!  Heh.  And where’s that money going to?

Straight to my platinum credit card bill, to help pay off this:

strange phobias…

Saturday, August 07, 2004

What kind of strange phobias do you have?

I don’t mean something like, fear of spiders or fear of heights, or something like that.  Those are common.

I mean, like mine:

I have a fear of pointy things aimed at my eyes.
Seriously. I physically flinch if something pointy is aimed at my eyes for more than a few seconds (like a pen, pencil, knife…. knitting needles…).  It just bugs me.

It’s especially bad when the pointy thing is being held by someone else.  I can usually tolerate it to some extent if the pointy thing is in my own hands (like knitting needles), but after a while it does bother me.  I just had to put down a set of #2 double pointed needles I’d been using for a while ‘cuz it was nearly giving me a headache (since when using DPNs, they tend to point in different directions).  Single needles or circular needles aren’t so bad, since they usually don’t point toward my face.. but the DPNs, yeah, those I can’t use for very long before my eyes start to bug on me and I get a tension headache.

That’s probably my strangest phobia.  Another strange one, but probably still fairly common, is fear of falling down stairs when travelling down them.  I can jog up a stairway with no problem, no need of the handrail… but when it comes to going down a stairway, my hand is firmly on the handrail.  I’m always afraid my feet will get all clumsy on me and trip over themselves and send me hurtling down the stairs.

That’s about it, really, for the strange ones, anyway.  Then there’s the typical ones like I named earlier… I abhor spiders (the bigger they are, the greater the fear), and I’m terrified of heights.

Funny story about my fear of heights…

Happy Birthday!

It’s Josh’s birthday today!

Yes, I’m a little late posting something on my blog about my own husband’s birthday.
But at least it’s still his birthday… I wasn’t a day late or some silly stuff like that! 😊

Happy birthday, honey! 💋

day 2 at job #2…

Tuesday, August 03, 2004

Second day, same as the first.

No, really.

Taping painted canvases again.  I thought they’d never end!  But they’re done!  Well, the stack they wanted me to do, anyway.  :cheese: I’m sure they have some more hidden around there somewhere.

Anyway, I got that done by 2pm*, so after that I tidied up an area where there are a bunch of magazines… people are so sloppy when looking through stacks of magazines.  I mean, really, how difficult is it to keep things in a neat stack?  Quite difficult, it would seem.  Meh. It only took like 10 minutes to straighten those up.

Then I wandered each isle looking at the different yarns, picking them up and putting them with their mates if they’d fallen… etc.  Watched the full-time gal ring up a couple of customers, watched her staple a small painted canvas to a stretcher frame.  Wandered the yarn isles some more.  Basically tried to kill two hours ‘til quittin’ time.

Oh, and I found out what that ‘spensive yarn is.  It’s actually by Trendsetter, called “Blossom”.  However, it’s custom dyed by a company called Prizm.  So that pretty much doubles the price.  And it’s $90 for only 8 oz of yarn.  🐛

I don’t need any special dye jobs, so I’m contemplating asking the boss to order me a bag of one of the standard colors.  I’d get twice as much yarn for about the same price.  Will have to think on it, though.  One of the reasons for picking up this job was to put the extra $ toward either A) our vacation to Flordia in December, or B) for Christmas fundage.  I may have to squeeze in some yarn purchases though.  I don’t know if it can be helped.  :cheese:

That was a year going by.  I just realized I made my very first post in MT on July 26, 2003.

Yay! My blog is a year old!
And so is Josh’s!

So where’s my blog’s anniversary cake?  Hmmm??

I think I’ve got a case of short-timers here…

Thursday, July 29, 2004

It’s funny.  I’m not quitting my “day” job for this second job I’ve gotten at the yarn store, but I’ve still got a pretty bad case of short-timer’s, I’m finding.

I found myself wanting to be there, learning the ropes at the yarn store, rather than here at my fulltime job, today.

I’ve not even worked 2 seconds at the yarn store, and I’m already wishing I were there as opposed to here.

I hope I enjoy working at the yarn store.  The ladies running the place seem really nice.  Even if it does mean I’ll be on my feet most of the time (I’ll be sure to wear my sneakers w/the arch support that I got while in Florida with the foot incident), it’ll be a refreshing change of pace.  And I may even get to knit, probably crochet, and do cross-stitch on occassion while working there…  I occassionally knit while I’m at work at my fulltime job, but only when it’s slow… and even then, I feel really strange doing it (as in, if a boss were to walk in and see me doing that, they’d give me the evil eye and the heebie-jeebies).  But at the yarn store, it’ll be a part of the job. 😊

To say I’m looking forward to starting work there on Monday would be stating the obvious.

the itching will drive me mad…

Wednesday, July 28, 2004

I have a rash on my left hand, above the ring & middle fingers.

It is driving me quite insane.

Josh & I had dinner with his mom & step-dad tonight, and something she asked us at dinner, later turned on a light for me…

Had I used any chemicals or came in contact with any recently? Changed soaps, etc?  At the time, my answer was an emphatic no.

However, on the way home, I realized something.

We slathered on sunscreen before going into the pool Sunday afternoon (when this rash first appeared).  And again today.

Ding!

Josh’s neck has started to get itchy today, and he mentioned he had the same itchiness when we used the sunscreen in Florida in March.

D’oh!  I guess we’re having a bad reaction to it.  Seems I’ll have to go on the hunt for another brand or something.

Ah well.  Sorry, TJ, that I didn’t realize it at the time you asked us about that. 😊

Neat-O

Monday, July 26, 2004

Earlier this month I wrote an email to the manager of a LYS (local yarn store) to see if they needed any part-time help this summer.  She wrote back a couple weeks later, and said they are, they need people to work full days, who know how to knit, cross stitch, and needlepoint.  She asked me to drop by when I had an opportunity to.

I did so today.  We chatted briefly, and she asked me if I knew how to cross stitch, since I had already mentioned in my email that I knit.  I said I do know how to cross stitch.  She then asked what days I had free.  I told her Mondays & Tuesdays.  She asked me if I could start next Monday.

I told her I could.

Wages are $7/hr (or $7.50? I suddenly can’t remember), plus a 20% employee discount.

That’s not bad at all.  So I’m going to give it a whirl and see how it works out.  Since I like knitting so much, maybe I’ll really enjoy working there.  😊
