just a little annoying…

Wednesday, January 05, 2005

I think I’ve ranted about Classmates.com before.  In short, I think that they’ve become too greedy.  You pretty much have to be a paid member to do just about anything at their site.

This morning I checked my mail and found I’d been sent an email via Classmates from one of my friends from high school.  I went to reply, and at the top of the page, it says this:

Please Note: As a Classmates member, you may reply to this Email once. To be able to send Email to any of our more than 38 million members or to reply to this Email more than once, you must become a Classmates Gold Member.

So I thought, ok, I can reply to my friend, give her my email addresses outside of Classmates and be done with it.  I compose my reply, and hit “preview message”.

What does their system do next?

Niki, you’re so close to getting in touch with **** ****!

All you need to do is become a Classmates Gold member and you’ll be able to email **** ****, or any of our more than 38 million members, whenever you like.

Um, yeah.  Excuse me?  Did I not read that first statement correctly?  Does it not say that I can reply once without having to pay??  WTF??

Bastards.  So I sent off an email to them this morning asking what the heck is up with that, their system lied and is demanding I pony up the membership fee before I can reply to my friend.  What a crock of shit!

I don’t expect to hear from them any time soon, so I am trying to cheat the system by posting my email addresses in my Bio.  For my friend to have sent me that email she obviously is a paying member, so she’ll be able to read my full bio and see my email addresses (craftily spelled out like “niki at prismaticdragon dot com” so as to avoid any automatic filters in their software!).  I just hope she checks it and sees it, as I’m not sure how else to get ahold of her at this point.  And there is no way I’m going to pay for a Classmates membership, even for a few months.  I’m not catering to their evilness.

rainy weekend

Arizona has been getting quite a bit of rain this weekend.. Rivers are overrunning their banks, mudslides are closing some highways, people are being stupid and trying to canoe on the swollen rivers…

We also got hail yesterday.  Pea-sized, but quite a bit of it.  Phoenicians are funny about unusual weather.  We always have to go watch when it starts coming down in buckets… or if there is hail, everyone runs to a window to watch…

Apparently there was also a tornado warning for some parts of Phoenix, our area included.  We weren’t home though, we were at Josh’s grandmothers for dinner last night.  So we saw the hail, but didn’t learn about the tornado warning for our area where our house is until before bed last night.  A few meek funnel clouds were seen here or there, but nothing touched down.

Anyway, back to the rain.  There has been so much of it that we’ve already had to drain some water out of our pool to keep it from over-flowing… and we’ll need to do it again later today due to the rain we got since we drained it on Monday has brought it back up to the max fill line again…

Fortunately this week up north the rain turned to snow this time (and they’ve been getting lots of it), so hopefully the snow pack will be great and the runoff in the spring will help the lakes a little.  It certainly won’t be enough to make up for the last 9 years of drought we’ve had, but it’s still nice.

we have coffee!

Monday, January 03, 2005

My replacement Home Cafe coffee maker came today.

This one doesn’t leak.  Yay!

The coffee is kind of strong, but not overpowering, and nothing that a little cream & sugar can’t tame a little.

It was pretty fast coming back, too.  I sent the cord out what, Tuesday I think? Via first class mail.  They shipped the coffee maker via Fed Ex.  So I am pretty pleased with their service so far.  I’ve never had to return anything in that manner before, but it worked out well.

Now I can make individual cups of coffee and not have to worry about wasting half a pot anymore.  Yay!

off to a rocky start…

Saturday, January 01, 2005

I hope what happened this morning doesn’t set the tone for 2005 for us.

Josh either got food poisoning or the flu early this morning.

The timing is about right for food poisoning… he ate at about 7:00-8:00pm last night and the sickness hit at about 2:30am.  But the symptoms of food poisoning are nearly identical to the flu… Fever, chills, vomiting, liquid poo….  So, since his dad, who ate at the same restaurant, KFC—but didn’t have the popcorn chicken that Josh did—isn’t sick, we may not know for sure .  We can only assume that it may have been the popcorn chicken.

All we do know is it hit hard and fast.  He went to bed feeling fine, and two hours later he was racing to the bathroom.

We were supposed to go to work today.. but with me running on about four hours of sleep (two from the time we went to bed to when he woke up sick, and two, one-hour naps since then), and he laid up on the couch sleeping this off, that didn’t happen.

I feel bad about it, but there was no way I’d be able to make a 45 minute drive down to work on so little sleep, and then spend another 45 minutes driving back home when the shift was overwith.  Not safely, anyway.

I do plan on notifying that restaurant that their food may have made him sick, just in case it is food poisoning and they get other reports of it.  I also got the number for the health department and will likely be calling them on Monday.

I hope everyone else’s new year is starting off better than ours did.

2005, coming right up!

Friday, December 31, 2004

2005 so far, is looking to be very expensive for us.

*whimper*
The bank account is going to royally hate us this coming year.

The only plus will be if/when we can finally refinance our 1st & 2nd mortgages in February, hopefully getting us back about $400-$500 a month.

I think the cars are scheming against us, knowing we may be coming into this extra money.  Curses!

underestimated…

So, our bosses scheduled a skeleton crew for today, consisting of three people in my department.

Normally, on a normal, typical holiday, that usually suffices.

Apparently half the U.S. didn’t get the memo that they’re supposed to take today off.

Since I got here at 10, we’ve gotten at least 12 new trouble tickets.  That’s only slighly less than we get on any normal business day.  WTF?

We ended up calling in two extra people to help out.  I can just feel my stress level falling now that the other two are here helping.

Beaten wife turns on cop husband

Thursday, December 30, 2004

Cop wife beater.

Stepping on her breast when she had just had out-patient surgery to remove a lump on the same breast?  What an asshole!  And putting his service revolver in her mouth, three times.

I’m glad she came to her senses, he got what he deserved.  I am just curious how she got ahold of his gun (assuming she used the same gun he had previously put in her mouth).

Regardless, I’m glad the circumstances were just right and she was finally able to get away from him.

putt… putt… *sputter* putt…

*yawn*

Someone forgot to switch my engine on this morning.  So… sleepy… Fighting the urge to nod off at my desk…..

I hate having to wake up at 4am.
So glad that tomorrow, even though I’m working a 12 hour shift, that I get to wake up at 8am.  FOUR hours of extra sleep! (if I go to bed at the same time as last night, of course, which I probably won’t).  But then it’s a 12 hour shift.  I’ll get home at about 11, try to stay awake for midnight (it is New Year’s Eve, after all), and then collapse in bed to wake up again at 8 for another 12 hour shift on Saturday.

Yeah, two of them in a row.  Stupid skeleton crew shifts on holidays.  Puh.  😠

Worse yet… Instead of getting a swing shift on the next rotation like we were hoping for, we’re stuck on this stupid shift, again, for another three months.  That does not make me happy at all.

through the thick of it…

We got quite a bit of rain yesterday.  Some areas of Arizona got up to 5” of rain, which is a lot considering our state is suffering a 9 yr drought and as a result the ground is often too hard to absorb the water.  Some of the news footage from Sedona, whose river was nearly overflowing, was pretty amazing.

But anyway… The storm has passed and this morning I had to drive through some fog.  Some wispy, thin stuff, and then some as thick as, yes, pea soup.

Ok, so visibility wasn’t so bad that I couldn’t see the car in front of me (around 80-100 ft I think?), but it was still pretty thick fog for a few miles.  We experience similar visibility issues when we get dust storms out here, but we don’t get fog nearly as often as we can get dust storms during monsoon, so it was just a little unusual to be driving through it.  Fortunately, the few miles that traffic was swallowed up by the low clouds resulted in no accidents, at least that I know of.  Not that there was much traffic at 5:30 to begin with.  😊

Santa had it in for me…

Tuesday, December 28, 2004

First, a sculpting tutorial DVD I got for Christmas was blank (manufacturer error, seller is giving us the same tutorial on VHS and another tutorial on DVD to replace it), now my Home Cafe coffee maker is defective.

It leaked, a lot, from somewhere inside.  From the very start, when I did the pre-brewing prepping by just sending plain water through it.  A nice big puddle of water underneath.

The second try, with a coffee pod in place, not only did it leak again, but the brewing cycle got stuck “on”.  Its cancel button ceased to function, and I had to unplug the thing to shut it off.  I had chosen the 9 oz setting.  It nearly overflowed a 16 oz cup since it was stuck.

Oh goodie.  I called their customer service center and described the scenario.  I was instructed to cut its cord about 6” from the plug (because there is a little piece of paper/tape toward the end with the serial nbr on it), and mail it in, and they’d ship me a new one.

It felt weird cutting the cord on an appliance.  But, I guess it’s easier than shipping the whole thing to them.

Speaking of which… I suppose I should head on over to the post office this afternoon and get it sent off.  I’m not even sure how long it will be before I get a replacement, since I forgot to ask.  Whoops.
